“I wanted the album to sound like it came from a different place in time,’ aldus Jim James. ‘Perhaps sounding as if it were the past of the future, if that makes any sense – like a hazy dream that a fully-realized android or humanoid capable of thought might have when it reminisces about the good old days of just being a simple robot. I take walks a lot and as I walk, songs kind of build in my mind. So I had a full vision for a lot of the songs on this album before I even recorded one note”. Deze visies hebben zich nu gemanifesteerd in ‘Regions of Light and Sound of God’ dat op 4 februari 2013 uitkomt bij V2 Records en het eerste soloalbum is van de zanger, gitarist en songschrijver van My Morning Jacket.
Al vijftien jaar en zes studioalbums lang is Jim James het middelpunt van een band die is uitgegroeid tot een van de meest bejubelde en gerespecteerde rockgroepen ter wereld. Met dit project verkent Jim James nieuwe terreinen. Tot nu toe voelde hij nooit de behoefte om een soloalbum te maken, “I’m very lucky to play in a band with guys that I love, who are great at what they do. I don’t have a need to play bass or keys or what have you. But as a person and as a musician, I love to play every instrument under the sun, and I wanted to make a record where I played all the instruments and produced/engineered it myself”.
‘Regions of Light and Sound of God’ bevat negen nummers die volgens een persbericht maar moeilijk te categoriseren zijn. Van de atmosferische funk van albumopener ‘State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)’ tot de operateske pop van ‘A New Life’ zou op Regions of Light and Sound of God niets zijn wat het lijkt. Het zou complex zijn maar samenhangend, intiem en hypnotiserend. Voor ‘Regions of Light and Sound of God’ was er een specifieke bron die veel van de nummers heeft vormgegeven: de baanbrekende grafische novelle ‘God’s Man’ uit 1929 van Lynd Ward. Het verhaal handelt over een kunstenaar die worstelt met verleiding en corruptie, maar ook ware liefde vindt. Terwijl Jim James aan het album bezig was, raakte hij steeds meer geïnspireerd om muziek te schrijven die bij het boek paste. “God’s Man came to me at a very important time. Some of the things happening in the book were happening to me in real life, in a very strange and painful, then a very beautiful way”.
Soloalbums, vooral van leadzangers, zijn vaak versplinterde collecties van stukken muziek die in de loop der jaren tot stand zijn gekomen. Zonder echte bedoeling en zonder doel. ‘Regions of Light and Sound of God’ wil precies het tegenovergestelde zijn. De heldere visie waarmee Jim James aan dit werk begon zou je van de eerste tot de laatste noot terug moeten horen. “The album knew what it wanted to be. The songs would tell me what they wanted to be, and I just had to search around and find those sounds to bring them into this world”.
