We geven ook dit jaar onze redacteurs carte blanche om terug te blikken op het voorbije (muzikale) jaar.
Als een kiem die ontsproot uit de asgrond van een recent gepasseerde bosbrand, vormde muziek een baken van ontspanning in een bewogen jaar. Creativiteit wist onverwacht te floreren in een jaar waarin bleek dat de cultuursector zich onder de eersten van de crisisslachtoffers zou rekenen. Of de inspiratie nu kwam uit verveling, woede of verdriet, 2020 bleek een vruchtvol jaar te zijn. Een waar genot voor iedere veelzijdige muziekliefhebber die met duim en wijsvinger op de kin ontwikkelingen waarnam over de genregrenzen heen.
De postpunk zette haar opmars voort met kleppers van Idles, Protomartyr en Fontaines D.C. Run The Jewels bevestigde zijn koningsstatus in het moderne hiphoplandschap en Nicolas Jaar en Ólafur Arnalds gaven de fans van de mondaine elektronische muziek waar voor hun geld. Het genre dat dit jaar notabel openbloeide was de hyperpop, al zat dit er al lang aan te komen. Artiesten zoals Dorian Electra, A.G. Cook en Food House grepen zuchtig uit Pandora’s doos der popconventies en duwden die zo ver boven hun limiet dat ze uiteenspatten in postmoderne, sardonische glitterorgieën.
Dat de lockdown een uitzonderlijke opportuniteit is/was voor introspectie en maatschappelijke reflectie voor menig artiest, spreekt voor zichzelf. Onderwerpen zoals gender, emancipatie, racisme en algemene politiek kwamen terecht centraal te staan in een periode waar fysiek protest minder voor de hand lag. Het doet denken aan de punkcultuur uit de jaren ’70, maar dan modern uitgedrukt in een uiteenzetting van meerdere genres en kleuren.
De beperking van mogelijkheden drukte zich het afgelopen jaar uit in een nieuwe, interessante bron van muzikaal scheppingsvermogen. Geen van ons kan exact voorspellen hoelang deze situatie nog zal aanslepen. We kunnen maar hopen dat het uiteindelijk losbreken uit dit stramien zich opnieuw zal vertolken in een golf van artisticiteit, gepuurd uit opluchting. Tot dan kunnen we nagenieten van de muzikale kreten der frustratie van 2020.
