Phil Elverum Kont deze zomer met een nieuw album. Altijd leuk nieuws, maar gezien zijn productiviteit op zich niet zo onverwacht, ware het niet dat hij de naam van The Microphones ervoor weer afgestoft heeft. Tegenwoordig kennen we de Amerikaanse songwriter vooral als Mount Eerie, de naam waaronder hij onder ander het hartverscheurende ‘A crow looked at me‘ schreef over de vroegtijdige dood van zijn vrouw. Voorheen bracht de man echter muziek uit onder The Microphones, het project dat verantwoordelijk is voor sadboy-indieklassiekers als ‘The glow pt. 2’. De verwachtingen voor een terugkeer naar de naam waaronder Elverum een cultmuzikant werd zijn hooggespannen.
7 augustus is de officiële release, maar wie niet zo lang meer kan wachten kan het project de avond ervoor al livestreamen via deze link. Het gaat om slechts één albumvullend nummer. De aankondiging van ‘Microphones in 2020’ ging gepaard met een gedicht van Elverums hand:
The old smell of air
coming faintly through the spring
crack in the snow above a hibernating bear’s winter den,
the smell of long self-absorption,
burrowing into one’s own chest, re-breathing the exhales of one’s own breath,
the smell of squinting in the dark
ruminating in dreams
beneath layering years, the snow still falling.
In the dark smoldering
slowly burning through all the old clothes, sifting through the ash,
wiping old shedded fur from the eyes
nosing out into the light.
In that brief moment when the airs of the past and present meet,
at the mouth of the open bed,
egoic solidity burns away in the spring wind, self becomes fuel,
there is only now
and the past is a dream burning off.
